A new frontier where the cello “performs opera,” transcending the boundaries of the suite!\n\nDutch maestro Peter Wispelwey has re-recorded all three of Benjamin Britten’s unaccompanied cello suites for the first time in a quarter-century (this marks his third complete recording of all three suites; separate recordings exist for the complete Suite No. 1, the Chaconne from Suite No. 2, and the Passacaglia from Suite No. 3) . It is said he specifically requested this recording in anticipation of 2026, the 50th anniversary of Britten’s death. In his previous recording, he conveyed a sense of tension and solitary grandeur at a tempo that took 76 minutes to complete the entire set; this time, having passed his 60th birthday and demonstrating musical maturity, he conveys even greater depth and a sense of awe. It is said that Wispelwey took on Britten after completing his third recording of Bach’s Unaccompanied Cello Suites, and one can sense his special affection for these two treasures of the unaccompanied cello repertoire.\nAlthough all of Britten’s unaccompanied cello suites were written for Rostropovich, at the time of composing No. 3, he had been stripped of his citizenship and forced into exile after being labeled a dissident for defending Solzhenitsyn. The piece features quotations reminiscent of Shostakovich and is regarded as a musical message from Britten to Rostropovich. Even today, half a century later, “Wispelway” seems to pour out the artist’s inner cry—reflecting the wars that continue to rage and the loss of his beloved son—and creates a music that is more austere than Rostropovich’s legendary recording, which is deeply moving.\n\n“Ever since I first began performing these suites 45 years ago, and even to this day, what has always remained in my heart is how expressive, clear, and evocative these works are—how they awaken people’s memories and how original they are—as well as how natural and distinctive his use of tonality is. They radiate the light of talent and genius. Just like Bach’s suites, they speak, sing, and dance. Moreover, they march, fight, groan, murmur, whisper, and shout. At times, they seem more like an opera than a suite.” (Peter Wispelwey)\nTokyo M Plus\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"Evil Penguin Records Classic","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":52941045891361,"sku":"608917727326","price":50.0,"currency_code":"CAD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0568\/8482\/2076\/files\/608917727326.jpg?v=1782997457","url":"https:\/\/cdsvinyljapan.com\/en-ca\/products\/608917727326","provider":"CDs Vinyl Japan Store","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
