László Leiter (1892-1963) was one of the greatest Hungarian composers of the first half of the 20th century, making important contributions to ethnomusicology, music education, and international cultural diplomacy. However, because of his opposition to communism, his music has rarely been performed since 1948. In recent years, he has been reevaluated and is known for his studies with the French composer Vincent d'Indy. His works include nine symphonies, ten string quartets, and many orchestral and chamber pieces, which are influenced by French and Hungarian music as well as neoclassicism.
