The clear overtones of the sho provided an appealing texture to incorporate into my attempts at slow-flowing piano works\" -- Samuel Reinhardt, a Swiss composer living in New York, through his exploration of repetition in music. Through his exploration of repetition in music, Samuel Reinhardt invites both listener and performer. The \"Works for Piano and Sho\" features Haruna Higashida, a Tokyo-based gagaku player who also works in the field of contemporary music, and Paul Jacob Fossum, a Canadian pianist living in Copenhagen who also appeared in Reinhardt's 2023 \"Works for Two Pianos and String Trio\". The two pieces on this album were recorded in Copenhagen and Tokyo, where Reinhardt stayed in 2023. The first, a multi-track recording of three pianos pursuing and repeating a thread-like motif, each slowly enveloping the other at their own pace. The second piece, in which the pianos move through three patterns of arpeggios, improvisations, and chords, and each repetition of this chain is accompanied by a single sho. The performer maintains the tone with touch and breath throughout the piece until the tone fades away.In between, the music deepens in silence as small improvisations are introduced and the piano tones touch the delicate, uneven pitches of the sho. By allowing the players to freely adjust the amount of playing within a given time frame, they \"have time to do nothing during the performance but simply listen to the sound, thereby creating an affinity between the act of playing and the act of listening. It allows the performer and listener to share a moment of deep immersion in the work together\" (Reinhardt). By listening to the work performed, the listener experiences the sense of time stretched out created by the two performers, all the details and emotions that emerge from that slow-moving world, and the work is completed by the afterglow that is etched in the listener's mind.
