However, because the Church of England and Catholicism were mixed at the time, he was subjected to religious oppression, and in 1585 his name was included in the Black List (a list of those who abstained from state religion). However, he was well versed in both religions, and he worked on liturgical music for both, eventually spending his final years in Essex, where he died under the generous protection of his Catholic defenders. He left not only religious music, but also a great deal of virginal music (as all keyboard instruments were called at the time), which he compiled into several collections, including virginal pieces by his contemporaries, to the delight of aristocrats and connoisseurs alike.Fantasia at that time was not a free form as seen in Romanticism, but a kind of fugue in which the opening theme of the piece was imitated one after another, and it seems to have had a meaning as a dance music.
