Michael Francis、Rheinland-Pfalz State Philharmonic Orchestra:Beethoven (1770-1827)

Description:

A groundbreaking album covering Mahler's Beethoven is now available! It is widely known that Mahler, who served as the conductor of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and other orchestral musicians, made some modifications to the orchestrations of the works of his predecessors, and there have been recordings of each of them. This is one of those rare projects. This set is ideal for systematically following the thoughts of Mahler, a skilled conductor with a keen composer's eye. Mahler's own symphonies are large-scale in both composition and orchestration, but the changes he made to his past works were slightly different in direction. Many of them are designed to balance the instruments and make them sound more effective, such as overlapping strings with wind instruments, omitting wind parts to emphasize detailed string phrases, and adding octaves to the wind movements. It is interesting to know which parts Mahler emphasized. As brass instruments have improved and usage has changed, melodies that were once out of tune have been added, or notes that were too high have been lowered, for example. However, it is also true that the horns are basically doubled, and the "Ninth" has been transformed into a huge Mahler-like composition with two timpani. The addition of timpani at the climax of the "Hero" funeral march fugue and before the fourth movement coda, the layering of trombones on the low strings in the first movement of the "Ninth" and the mobilization of tubas to support the contrabassoon in the fourth movement are also quite shocking. British conductor Michael Francis, who will assume the position of chief conductor in 2019, will lead the orchestra in bringing these things to light one after another. The basic tempo is fast, and the orchestra's sound emphasizes clarity of detail rather than blended resonance.Accents are emphasized, and the period technique seems to have been adopted, such as when the phrases are cut short, but it all seems to have been adopted to present Mahler's intentions more clearly. Although the Ninth is only 64 minutes long, the third movement is played slowly with a limpid sound, convincing the audience that the "adagio" designation is being adhered to. The music is not all about speed and strong accents, but has a rich expression and flow, and the performance is vigorous and propulsive, making it one of the most rewarding of Beethoven's many recordings. The Japanese edition comes with a Japanese-language commentary by Mahler scholar Yoshio Maejima. Naxos Japan
