The three pieces recorded here were composed for St. Thomas Church in Leipzig between 1723 and 1725, and all have arias and recitative in each voice part that contrast vividly with the chorus, and the wind instruments also play an obbligato role here and there. No. 147, written in 1723 for the feast of the visit of the Virgin Mary to Elizabeth, is a large-scale work in two parts, and is gorgeous from the outset with the use of trumpets. The chorus at the end is widely known as \"Lord, Joy of Man's Desiring\" (the end of the first part is also the same music with different lyrics). The collection also includes masterpieces such as No. 99, written for the 15th Sunday after Trinity in 1724, and No. 6, written for the 2nd day of Easter in 1725. The vocal lineup is composed of three members in each part, with Alex Potter as alto (countertenor) and Peter Coy as bass.In addition to Dorothee Meals, the soprano is Munich resident Tomoyuki Okamura. In all of these works, Herreweghe sings with a natural dynamism and elongation, and the world view expressed in each lyric is sung with freshness.
