Nicolas Lebegue was patronized by Louis XIV, the Sun King, as was Lully in the same period. He was a master of organ and clavesan (harpsichord), and also left works for both instruments as a composer, dying in 1702. The Royal Chapel at Versailles and its organ were finally completed around 1710, just before the end of Louis XIV's reign, so Lebegue never played on the organ that can be heard today, which was restored to its original state. However, it is said that Lebegue's advice was greatly reflected in the ordering of this instrument to the master craftsman Robert Clicquot.
