The first piece, written between 1857 and 1858, was a chamber piece for nine quartets, but Brahms destroyed the original score when he arranged it for orchestra in 1860. Here we are performing the version for nine quartets restored by Lottar based on the orchestral version. No. 2 was conceived as a small orchestral version, excluding the violins, and premiered in 1860. Clara Schumann is said to have praised the beauty of the second movement, Adagio. The Linos Ensemble also performs this piece with one string part each.
