As a boy, he received an ideal musical education as a choirboy at Hereford Cathedral and attended the organ education of Roy Massey, then director of music at the cathedral. He then studied music at Oxford University and became an organ scholar at St. Peter's College. He taught piano for over 25 years, and as a composer he left behind a diverse body of work, especially religious choral music. This album features King's Church Music for Gloucester Cathedral, 11 works composed between 2012 and 2020, all of which were premiered in the majestic setting of Gloucester Cathedral. King died shortly before this session took place, but was very pleased to have this recording made; it includes the Magnificat for the 2016 Three Choirs Festival, Nunc Dimittis, and the song for Carol Ann Duffy's poem The Christmas Truce,\" which is a hauntingly simple and beautiful melody.
