Born in Taganrog, Russia, he immigrated to Poland in 1923. He entered the Conservatory of Music in Krakow and made his conducting debut in 1933 while still a student there; after graduating from the Conservatory in 1938, he became a professor of violin at the Conservatory and spent time in Krakow during the occupation of Poland by Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union. After the war, he revived the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra in Katowice and served as music director of the Warsaw National Philharmonic Orchestra from 1958-77. He toured abroad several times and was decorated by the Polish government several times. He then moved to West Germany, where he served as principal conductor of the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra from 1982 to 1985, and also made guest appearances with the London Symphony Orchestra, Philharmonia Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra, and Vienna Symphony Orchestra. He was also active in the music of his time, and Lutoslawski's \"Concerto for Orchestra\" was dedicated to him. With only a limited number of recordings, including Dvořák: The Complete Symphonies with the London Symphony Orchestra and a concerto with Richter, this Tchaikovsky album is the first release of all of them, and is a valuable complement to the lack of Lovicki's discography. Rowitzki's conducting is characterized by a fast tempo and precise control of detail, and his basic characteristic is a muscular, sharp, and tough expression without indulging in aesthetic or sentimental moods. This was no different in the lyrical \"Waltz of the Flowers\" from \"The Nutcracker,\" recorded in 1979, and you can enjoy an interpretation that is typical of Rowicki, who played straightforwardly throughout his life. *Newly mastered from the original broadcast tape.
