Graupner, who had always loved the sound of the bassoon and wanted to use it in his own works, was finally able to write a work for this instrument in April 1736, when he met Johann Christian Krotsch, a famous bassoonist who had come to Darmstadt from Zerbst. After writing several concertos first, Graupner then wanted to test his skills in the church, so he signed a contract with Krotsch and composed cantatas focusing on the bassoon's tone, eventually using it in 16 cantatas by 1741, captivating audiences with its innovative tone. This album contains six pieces. The bassoon here is played by Italian player Sergio Azzolini. He is skilled in handling the delicately built bassoons of the Baroque period and gives an excellent performance.
