The first collection of orchestral works by Finland's hottest new female composer, Tarkiainen] Born in Rovaniemi, Finland in 1985, Tarkiainen studied composition at the Sibelius Academy and the University of Miami, and is also active in jazz, including big band composition. Ooti Tarkiainen is a jazz composer who also composes for big bands. His compositions are based on the landscapes of Lapland, the northernmost part of Scandinavia, and the culture of the Sami people. Although he has previously released CDs of instrumental and chamber music, this is his first collection of orchestral works. Based on a Sámi poem, "Earth, Daughter of Spring" sings of Lapland's nature, history, and the ideas that have been cultivated within it, with music that maintains a high tension between beauty and severity. The concerto, written for jazz saxophonist Jukka Pelko, is titled "Saivo," the Sami word for "sacred land," and is a uniquely modern work in which the soloist processes sounds through various effectors operated by his or her feet. It is a thrilling work with a jazz groove.
