This masterpiece opera was composed by Weill in his later years to a libretto by Langston Hughes, based on Elmer Rice's 1928 Pulitzer Prize-winning stage play \"Street Scene,\" which was made into a film. Influenced by the strength of the American music scene, Weill combined the traditional European operatic form with American music that he had researched - musicals, gospel, blues, and pop - and proudly called it \"American Opera\". It premiered at the Adelphi Theatre on Broadway in 1947. This production is a further development of the one that director Fuljames presented in London to great acclaim in 2008 and again in Paris in 2013, and is a co-production with the Royal Opera House of Madrid, the Opera House of Cologne, and the Opera House of Monte Carlo. Two hot and humid summer days in the poor immigrant neighborhood of the Lower East Side. The drama centers on the Morant family of Frank, a patriarchal and violent husband, his wife Anna, their daughter Rose, a businesswoman, and their young son Willie, who live in a single communal house, and the cheerful Fiorentino family of Italian immigrants, the intellectual Jewish Kaplan family, gossipy Mrs. Jones, and others of various races and cultural backgrounds. The film is a drama about people of various ethnic and cultural backgrounds. Against the backdrop of moral and social oppression and corruption in American society, the story dramatically unfolds into a tragic love affair between Rose and Sam, a young man of the Kaplan family, a longing for showbiz, and a murder caused by Anna's adultery.
