With works by Radiohead, Actress, Laurel Halo, and others, as well as a participation in the soundtrack created by Jonny Greenwood, a collaboration with Mira Callix, and even a collaborative release with Mica Levi, the group has received accolades from renowned artists, the Royal Academy of Music, and the, This is the third album from cellist\/composer\/producer Oliver Coates, a graduate of the London Contemporary Orchestra, on RVNG Intl. With this work, Coates offers a capsule of personal resonances and memories gathered over the past six years, tracing the metallic structures and viscous string modulations familiar from his previous work, skins n slime, released in 2020, as well as the films Aftersun (Charlotte Wells, 2022 ), The Stranger (Thomas M. Wright, 2022), and Occupied City (Steve McQueen, 2023), nurturing his inner impulse following a series of acclaimed scoring projects. During the making of Aftersun, Wells asked Coates how he could use music to let people know that someone was tapping into their memories. The question has stayed with him ever since, running a pulse throughout the record. Throb, shiver, arrow of time is \"an inaccurate transmission from memory overlaid with emotion from other sources,\" Coates says. The release is a cacophony of misremembered whisperings overshadowed by a strange mass of emotion, a mixture of the pain and brilliance of memory. The core of the album is the seventh track, \"Shopping center curfew,\" a swift yet cavernous song that was born when two real-world events that occurred in South London during a pandemic lockdown five years ago merged in a dream. The song is a quick, yet cavernous piece of music. It discusses the demolition of the Elephant \u0026amp; Castle shopping center and the possibility of an actual curfew for all men after a violent crime. There is a strange simultaneity to this song, and Coates built an album from it, refracting the spasmodic glimmer of a latent sense of temporal entropy into a lucid sonic topology. In the album's ten tracks, weightless melodies soar across gradations of magnified and compressed afterimages. The foggy tones of \"Please be Normal\" and \"90\" soften the tremors of drone-soaked internal sonic chaos. Vocal invocations by longtime collaborators Malibu and chrysanthemum bear also make an appearance, as does the drifting synth glow of Faten Kanaan.
