A live recording of Sartorio’s Giulio Cesare has been reissued! Long before Handel’s masterpiece Giulio Cesare in Egitto (Julius Caesar) captivated audiences across Europe, the Italian composer Antonio Sartorio had already created his own magnificent work based on this timeless libretto. To commemorate the 350th anniversary of the Venice premiere, this reissue presents a live recording from a modern performance using period instruments to recreate the sound of the era (Innsbruck Early Music Festival, 2004). Recorded under the baton of Attilio Cremonese, this album is a valuable recording that vividly conveys Sartorio’s exceptional creativity. The 55 exquisitely crafted arias and duets not only mark the birth of the sophisticated Baroque vocal style but also, through their lavish basso continuo and rich instrumental arrangements, serve as a vital bridge linking the vocal art of the late Renaissance to the operatic masterpieces of later generations.
