This work celebrates the 100th anniversary of Emahoui's birth and commemorates the first anniversary of her death.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis album commemorates the 100th anniversary of the birth of Emahoy Tsegaye Mariam Gebroux and the first anniversary of her death. The songs on the album were recorded at two of her memorial performances at the Commercial Exchange in Paris in April 2024.\n\n\n\nThe album is also the culmination of a journey that began almost 20 years ago in 2005. While rummaging through a London record store, pianist\/composer Maya Dunietz and conductor Ilan Volkov discovered Emahoi's CD, released as part of the acclaimed \"Éthiopiques\" series. Intrigued, they sought out this acclaimed musician and finally succeeded in meeting her at a small monastery in Jerusalem.This is how the three of them met, and from there their relationship developed into a deep and long conversation. Emma Hui talked about life in the monastery and the difficulties of making music there, and they discussed her music in depth and in detail. At one point, when I asked about notation, Emahoui showed me a notebook with the music she had written that morning. Maya and Ilan played some of them on the piano, and gradually Emahoy began to trust them. Before leaving, Maya wrote her phone number in Emahoi's notebook and told him to call her anytime he needed anything.\n\n\n\nA few years later, the call came. Emahoy invited Maya to the convent and handed her an old, wrinkled Air Ethiopia plastic bag filled with hundreds of sheet music. She asked Maya to publish a collection of her piano compositions and bring them to people all over the world. To embark on such a grand project, Maya partnered with the Jerusalem Cultural Season, which led to the publication of a book of sheet music and essays in 2013, and numerous concerts around the world.\n\n\n\nAt one of our many meetings, Emma Hui shared her dream of arranging her own songs for orchestra. She said it was too late for her to do it herself, but with her signature smile and wink, she suggested, \"You could do it, couldn't you? He suggested, \"You can do it. For Maya, this generous compliment was the catalyst for all the string arrangements she would create for Emahoy's beautiful music. After years of collaboration and discussion between Maya and the record label Latency, the arrangements on the album were completed.\n\n\n\nSilver print cover","brand":"Latency","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":51383881072929,"sku":"4062548116212","price":67.0,"currency_code":"CAD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0568\/8482\/2076\/files\/4062548116212.jpg?v=1750043881","url":"https:\/\/cdsvinyljapan.com\/en-ca\/products\/4062548116212","provider":"CDs Vinyl Japan Store","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
