Metta's session recordings of Mahler's Fifth Symphony with the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 1976 and with the New York Philharmonic in 1989 are strongly remembered as characteristic of his time as music director, but this live recording with the Bayerisches Staatsorchester is the first recording of Mahler's Fifth Symphony made with the orchestra in 2004.
