The subject matter of his oratorio \"The Good Shepherd\" (Der gute Hirt) is in the Viennese tradition, music about the death and burial of Jesus Christ, a popular topic at the time. The content is based on the Bible and the text was compiled by Werner himself. The parable Christ told about the \"Good Shepherd,\" a man who desperately tries to find one of his sheep if he loses sight of it, refers to a sinner who is lost and to God who finds and forgives him. The score is now preserved in the Hungarian National Library in Budapest.
