He is known for his sonatas for violin and many other instrumental works, and his most famous religious vocal work is the 53-voice \"Salzburg Mass,\" performed in 1682 for the 1100th anniversary of the Religious Foundation of Salzburg. His talent as a composer was recognized early on by Emperor Leopold I, who conferred the title of nobility on him in 1690. In his later years, he concentrated on composing religious works, operas, and school plays, including the 36-voice \"Missa Allegro\" on this album. This work was composed for a performance at the Salzburg Cathedral. The musicians on this disc are Ars Antiqua Austria, led by violin virtuoso Gunnar Letzborg.The original score was lost from Salzburg, but a copy is preserved at the monastery in Kremsmünster, and Retzboll said that this performance is based on it. The orchestra consists of 8 solo voices, 8 chorus, strings, 2 cornetto, 6 trumpet, 3 trombone, timpani, and basso continuo. The solo chorus skillfully combines the various parts to create a variety of sounds, and the string section, as one would expect from Bieber, uses a brilliant violin technique and emphasizes the many trumpets that are characteristic of Bieber, creating a gorgeous piece of music.
