This identity is shaped by his Southern upbringing, his growing up years in New Orleans, and his longtime devotion to the New York City jazz world.\n\n\n\nEllis' Double Wide Band was formed to feature phenomenal New Orleans sousaphone player Matt Perrin. For nearly two decades, the ensemble's membership has been in flux, solidified by the addition of trombonist Alan Farber, keyboardist Gary Versace, and drummer Jason Marsalis. Double Wide continues to be an eclectic ensemble of fine musicians who combine linguistic flexibility with expressive depth.\n\n\n\nDouble Wide had the opportunity to take an extended residency at Brooklyn Recording following their appearance at the 2019 Lake George Jazz Festival. Ellis spent three days with the band in the studio, giving them time to experiment and finish Ellis' original compositions. The music on Fireball focuses on the incredible range of colors, textures, and moods created by the members of Double Wide.\n\n\n\nThe music conceived by Ellis for Fireball was inspired by a composition fellowship he received in Santa Monica, California, and a recent podcast piece.
