Tan Dun was inspired by a visit to the many and varied ancient caves in Dunhuang with their myriad musical murals, \"These musical paintings depict more than 4000 instruments, 3000 musicians, and 500 bands. I was so deeply moved that I could hear most of the sounds coming from that mural\". After several years of research and compositional struggle to revive the murals, the Buddha Passion was completed in 2019.Created in the foothills of the Himalayas and inspired by Chinese and Sanskrit texts, the engaging and life-inspiring score blends ancient Buddhist teachings with the musical tradition of J.S. Bach's Passion with hypnotic orchestral textures and oriental vocal techniques. Recorded in 2019 at the Shanghai Oriental Art Center with the Orchestre National de Lyon and International Choir Academy Lubeck, conducted by Tan Dun, along with renowned Chinese soloists.
