While many composers lost their reason for writing after the stagnation of avant-garde music, he is a rare composer who succeeded in restoring a sense of nostalgia and retrospection within the framework of functional harmony. These works incorporate distinctive Russian and Ukrainian pronunciation and vocalization, as well as echoes that mimic church reverberations and bell tones, allowing the listener to hear the lyrical beauty of a cappella choral works. ECM's excellent recording incorporates the stunning reverberations of Kiev's iconic St. Mihail Golden Dome Monastery. And the precision harmonies of the prestigious Kiev Chamber Choir weave the quiet prayer music in a variety of sound qualities.
