Rudi Stefan (1887-1915) was a German composer renowned as a pioneer of Expressionism. He studied in Frankfurt and Munich, and his \"Music for Orchestra\" in 1912 brought him to prominence, but he went to war in World War I and was killed in Russia at the young age of 28. His expressive late-Romantic style is said to be similar to that of R. Strauss and Pfitzner, but many of his compositions seem to have been about the \"end of human existence. Some of them evoke the \"joy of living,\" but even these are treated in contrast with inner melancholy. Many of Stefan's autographs were destroyed by fire, but Hinrich Alpers has been fascinated by Stefan's works since he was a teenager, and has studied, researched, and introduced his works to the public. The works recorded here are rare recordings of reconstructions and performances from the few drafts that survived the fire.
