Under the baton of Bruno Walter, Arthur Löter, and many other great conductors, the Berlin Deutsche Oper is the only opera house in former West Berlin to have woven its history in this way. Although the building was destroyed by air raids in 1943, it was rebuilt in 1961, and the reopening performance featured Fritsch’s production of *Don Giovanni*. While footage of this performance is available (included in ARTHAUS101574), this particular recording features footage from a performance commemorating the theater’s 50th anniversary. Conductor Arthur Rother, despite a brief hiatus, had been associated with this opera house since 1934 and had conducted numerous performances there. The program featured *Fidelio*, the same work performed at the opera house’s opening in 1912—a piece truly befitting such a historic occasion. The singers were also selected with the utmost care: Christa Ludwig, who—though still a rising star at the time—had already gained international renown; James King, who had made a name for himself at the Metropolitan Opera; the then 33-year-old rising star Walter Berry; and Josef Greindl, who was active primarily in Bayreuth—bringing together the finest “German opera singers” of the time. Partly because the work itself underwent many twists and turns before its completion, it is an opera that is quite difficult to refine thoroughly from start to finish; however, thanks to the streamlined staging and the skillful singers, this performance boasts a magnificent result.\nNaxos Japan\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"Arthaus Musik","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":53595400700193,"sku":"807280159790","price":152.0,"currency_code":"BRL","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0568\/8482\/2076\/files\/807280159790.jpg?v=1790480987","url":"https:\/\/cdsvinyljapan.com\/en-br\/products\/807280159790","provider":"CDs Vinyl Japan Store","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
