The story is about a group of pirates who were washed up on the beach after their ship was wrecked by a storm. Medulla, the daughter of the Greek who saved them, falls in love with Conrad, the leader of the pirates, and Conrad reciprocates. However, Medulla and her friends are captured by the Turks, who suddenly invade and take them to the slave market. The girls are auctioned off in front of the Turkish governor while dancing a beautiful dance, but then pirates led by Conrad, disguised as slave traders, arrive. The pirates are elated when they get their daughters back and hold a feast, but after a slight rift between the pirates and the Turkish governor, another disturbance ensues. The ballet \"The Pirates,\" based on a narrative poem by Byron, is known to have used music by Adolphe Adan (1803-1856) when it was first performed in 1856, but when Marius Petipa revived it in 1858, he added music by Pugni, and when it was revived in Paris in 1867, he added music by Dreib. In 1867, when the ballet was performed again in Paris, Dreib's music was added. The English National Ballet (ENB) is performing this work, which is not in the repertoire of the Royal Ballet in the UK, so it is rare to have a chance to see it. The production is directed by ballerina-turned-ballerina Anna Marie Holmes, who has given the production an oriental flavor that is at once stylish and brilliant. The lead role of Medulla is danced by one of the finest dancers in the company, Alina Cojocaru.Muntagirov, who danced convincingly, and Acosta, who danced beautifully as the symbol of evil who betrays his friends. Please enjoy the superb performances by these and other members of the ensemble.
