He studied under Humperdinck in Berlin when he was young, and his works are strongly influenced by the late Romanticism. However, this German style of music was not very popular in Spain at that time, and although he worked as a pianist for a while, he ended up living quietly in a small village, studying bird sounds. His music is expressive and beautiful, as can be heard in the string quartet heard here. No. 4 is an exquisitely controlled, soft work with refined melodies and eloquent themes, like those of Lecoux or Debussy. The dialogue between the various instruments is lively, and the music is sometimes colored by chromatic chords. The unfinished third piece begins with a broad, dramatic introduction that changes expression at a dizzying pace, culminating in a solemn fugue in the middle. We know very few details about the three small pieces placed at the end, but they are all well thought out and exquisitely written.
