Lucas Genuchus reveals the composer's own piano, as the Sonata No. 1 was born! Lukas Genouchas has won many prizes at the Chopin and Tchaikovsky Competitions. Following the Rachmaninoff Sonata No. 1 with Asmik Grigorian, ALPHA's second program will also be Rachmaninoff's Piano Sonata No. 1. Moreover, Genuchus himself contacted the Russian State Museum of Music to record the piece for the first time, using the original manuscript score stored there. This work is known as a difficult piece, and although it was composed in Dresden in 1907, it was not well received by the public, and was drastically cut at the suggestion of pianist Konstantin Igumnov, who gave the first performance the following year. However, the unpublished manuscript score kept in Moscow retains the original form in its entirety, which is more than 100 bars longer than the one performed today, and the difficulty level is even higher, especially in the latter half of the first movement and after the middle of the third movement, where major differences can be heard.Genuchus is in love with this work, saying that its "overwhelming power and grandeur rivals the Piano Concerto No. 3," and he has brought out the best of its charms with his own technical prowess and strong expressiveness. In addition, this recording was made at Rachmaninoff's villa on the shores of Lake Lucerne in Switzerland, using instruments presented by Steinway to commemorate his 60th birthday.
