The title, “53°33'N 9°59'E,” refers to Hamburg’s coordinates; the album was created with the theme of unraveling the city’s history and the lives of its people not through visual landmarks, but through musical “soundmarks.”\n\nThe program ranges from works by Hamburg-born masters such as Brahms and Fanny Hensel (sister of Felix Mendelssohn) to pieces by contemporary masters like Schnittke and Gubaidulina, who spent their later years in the city, It also includes rare works by Felicitas Kuckuck—a Jewish composer born in Hamburg who survived World War II and was a student of Hindemith—as well as Paul Dessau.\nBy interweaving widely known masterpieces with fine works by often-overlooked composers who lived through turbulent times, this album masterfully portrays the multifaceted musical history of this city from the 19th to the 20th century. The diverse and nuanced performances by Eva Wetzel and Antonio Di Dedda vividly bring to life the multifaceted character of the city.\n\nEva Wetzel earned her bachelor’s degree from the North Carolina School of the Arts and her master’s degree from Yale University. In October 2025, she completed the Konzertprüfung (performer’s degree)—the highest degree offered—with distinction under the guidance of Tanya Becker-Bender at the Hamburg University of Music and Drama. She served as a trainee with the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra and has won prizes at numerous international competitions.
