The masterpiece of Schütz's last years, composed 66 years before Bach's work of the same name, has been beautifully reproduced by Flömich! Mastered only in the analog domain and converted directly to DSD! The 30th SACD hybrid reissue of Schütz's (1585-1672) \"Matthew Passion\", composed 66 years before Bach's eponymous work in 1666, is now available in analog stereo on SACD for the first time in the world! This reissue project was originally planned for 2022, the 250th anniversary of Schütz's death, but due to the search for master tapes and production delays, it finally took over a year to realize the project. The sound quality has been preserved in excellent condition, and the recording is suitable for SACD, which is also outstandingly effective for vocal music. The 81-year-old Schütz composed the \"Matthew Passion\" for the Dresden Court Chapel, a purely vocal work with no instruments, consisting only of single voices and a capella chorus. In a simple style and solemn atmosphere, Schütz dramatically depicted the Passion story from Matthew 26-27 (Luther's translation of the German Bible) with skillful characterization of the characters. The performance is by the Dresden Choir of the Holy Cross conducted by Martin Frömich (1913-1998), and features some of Germany's finest singers. In 1971, Freemich succeeded Rudolf Mauersberger as music director (Kreuzkantor) of the Choir of the Holy Cross in Dresden, a position he held until 1991. He had a wide repertoire ranging from ancient to contemporary music, and was especially known as a leading interpreter of Schütz. The Holy Cross Choir of Dresden, which has a history of about 700 years, is another group closely associated with Schütz, who was active in Dresden in the 17th century. This recording was first released in Japan in 1976, and has been well received by lovers of the music on LP and CD. In this recording, Fremich draws from the Dresden Choir of the Holy Cross, which uses a boys' chorus for the women's part, to bring out a centripetal sound that is appropriate for the work. The soloists include Schreier and Polster (both from the Dresden Choir of the Holy Cross), Lorenz, and Rotsch, all of whom are German singers of great renown. Their beautiful voices and thoughtful singing, combined with the chorus interspersed at key points, will take the listener into the maelstrom of Christ's tragedy.
