This is the third concert by Gianandrea Noseda \u0026amp; the LSO, the principal guest conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra. Noseda and the LSO first collaborated in 2008, and have since released Britten: War Requiem (LSO0719, recorded in 2011) and Verdi: Requiem (LSO0800, recorded in 2016), as well as Verdi: Rigoletto, Berg, Mahler, and Shostakovich in concert. The orchestra's credentials are growing stronger and stronger, as they have featured Verdi: Rigoletto, Berg, Mahler, and Shostakovich in concert. Shostakovich's Symphony No. 8 was composed in 1943, in the midst of the Russo-German War, when the Soviet Union was on the offensive. Although it was composed at a time when there was a glimmer of hope, it is not so much an exuberant or joyous work as it is a poem of suffering. It also contains some of the most poignant elements of Shostakovich's works, as if he were praying for peace rather than victory.Noseda's deep empathy for the work and Shostakovich's complex thoughts and prayers for peace in the work will be dynamically portrayed with the London Symphony Orchestra.
