Rachmaninoff composed the Prayer for the Russian Orthodox Church in 1915, at the end of the Empire. At the time, he was a world-renowned pianist, and as a composer, he produced complex works using modern compositional techniques, such as the choral symphony \"The Bells\" and the exercise \"Sound Pictures. It is surprising that he, who as a composer was regarded as \"the Westerner in Russia,\" should have dabbled in Orthodox religious music, the essence of Russian music, but he has created a magnificent work in keeping with tradition. Both the conductor and the chorus are non-Russian musicians, but they were trained by Gergiev, and the Russian colors are impressive.It is said that Rachmaninoff, who was a master of the piano, had somewhat pianistic ideas in his vocal writing, but the precision of the London Symphony Chorus is astounding.
