Unusually for European musicians of the time, he studied in the United States, at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. In 1936, when he was already highly acclaimed as a soloist, Wilhelm Furtwängler asked him to become principal cellist of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. In 1947 he moved to the principal cello of the Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra, a position he held until 1977. He has great technique and musicality as a solo cellist and deserves more attention as a soloist. The four pieces on this CD, especially the Saint-Saens with Hans Rothbout, are very brilliant and wonderful. Schumann with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Karl Böhm also shows de Mahula's taste well.
