Vladimir Viald, born in the Soviet Union in 1949, studied at the Moscow Conservatory under Lev Naumov, and won the third prize at the Ron Thibaud International Competition in 1971 and the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 1973. However, he had an unfortunate period of restricted activities outside of Japan due to the turmoil in the Soviet Union, known as the \"Iron Curtain\". After his freedom of travel was restored, he has performed with such masters as Lorin Maazel and Zubin Mehta, and has made numerous recordings.
