Mozart encountered the genre at age 17, and his particular fondness for playing the viola fueled his creative drive for quintets. The double-viola instrumentation is uniquely Mozartian (Boccherini and Schubert used two cellos). This collection features six masterpieces, including K.174—often considered one of the young Mozart's most ambitious sonata-form finales—and K.515, composed during a period of intense emotional turmoil marked by his father's illness, while he was also creating the rich operas The Marriage of Figaro and Don Giovanni. and K.516 (in G minor!). Violinist Oleg Kashif is Artistic Director and Professor at the International Menuhin Academy in Switzerland. The other members are also musicians with deep ties to the Menuhin Academy.
