Ryadov studied with Rimsky-Korsakov at the Petersburg Conservatory and later taught at his alma mater. The Enchanted Lake, Op.62, was composed in his later years from a sketch of an unfinished opera, and was first performed in St. Petersburg in 1909 under the direction of Tcherepnin. It is a very impressive orchestral work with a beautiful melody that uses strings and harp to represent small waves on a lake. Recorded by Litton \u0026amp; the Bergen Philharmonic, the orchestra has concentrated on Prokofiev in recent years, including Romeo and Juliet (BIS SA 1301), a collection of piano concertos with Freddy Kemp (BIS SA 1820), Symphony No. 6 (BIS SA 1994), Symphony No. 5 and Scythian Suite \"Ara and Lorrie\" (BIS SA 2124), and many other releases on the BIS label.
