Leif Segelstam, Turku Philharmonic Orchestra

In 1807, Beethoven was so impressed by the play "Coriolan" by his friend, lawyer and poet Heinrich Joseph Collin, that he finished at once the overture "Coriolan" based on the play. This inspired Colin to propose to Beethoven the composition of several operas, which unfortunately never came to fruition. However, Beethoven's passion for drama never cooled, and in 1809, Joseph Hartl asked him to compose an opera for Goethe, which he gladly accepted, taking almost six months to write and conduct the first performance. The subject is the heroic episode of the Flemish soldier Egmont (Evmont), to which Beethoven added powerful and solemn music that also involved his own political interests. The entire play is rarely performed in its entirety today, but this album includes the entire play, including a reading by the famous bass singer Salminen. You can enjoy the high degree of perfection in this performance. Naxos Japan
