The purpose was to promote the \"modern music\" of the time to the general public, and the society performed a carefully rehearsed and elaborate program once a week. During the three years from its inception until 1921, when the orchestra was forced to suspend its activities due to inflation, 117 concerts were held and 154 works were performed. However, for various reasons, such as funding, symphonies and orchestral works that required large orchestras were not performed in their original form, but were arranged by Schoenberg and his pupils into smaller orchestras. The two works on this album are both arranged by Schoenberg himself.
