Sibelius had composed the music for the play, but Strindberg, the husband of Harriet Bosse, who played the lead role of Melisande in the play, was so impressed with the music that he begged Sibelius to add music to his own play, \"The Swan Princess\" as well. However, the premiere in Stockholm was not realized, and eventually the Swedish theater intervened and asked Sibelius to compose the music again, which was finally performed for the first time in 1908. Strindberg incorporated various fairy tale elements into this story, so it is probably inevitable that the central story is the feud between the Swan Princess and her stepmother, who is a witch, and the romance with the prince, which is in a sense a universal (one might say common) work.Sibelius has added Grieg-style music to this play, which is a little different from his usual style. Usually, the suite version is performed, but it is better to listen to the whole piece to get a sense of Sibelius' true intentions. The other two pieces on this disc are \"The Lizard,\" which is rarely performed in concert because it is a complete piece of dramatic music, and two recitations of Sibelius' works.
