His father, John Johnson (1583?-1633), was also a well-known musician. Active at almost the same time as Dowland, he left behind music with an exquisite and sentimental feel, following old forms such as Pavin, Almain, and Galiardo, but exploiting the possibilities of the nine-course lute (a classification based on Renaissance tuning) to the utmost. The music is performed by the well-known Nigel North. The original compositions are accompanied by some of his own arrangements, to great effect. The picture on the jacket is of Henry, the son of King James I, for whom he worked, and the first piece \"Prince Almain\" was written for him.
