Born in Tallinn, he studied at the Estonian State Conservatory of Music under Mart Sahl and at the Moscow Conservatory under Vissarion Shevarine. Active since the days of the former Soviet Union, he was known as a leading figure in Estonian music. This album contains 27 songs written between 1946 and 2005. The early songs are characterized by a simple, rustic style, influenced by his teacher Saal and Estonian folk songs. The middle and later works incorporate the minimalist melodies and repetitive verses of Estonian folk songs, and require a high degree of precision and concentration in performance. Examples are \"The Fairy Tale Song of the Three Setts\" and \"Singing in the Fields. The Seto region in southern Estonia, bordering Russia, has its own culture and customs different from those of Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, and these lyrics are woven with \"spells\" to avoid bad luck. And \"Huiked,\" a work inspired by Estonian folklore, captures the traditional calls of communication, such as the calls of women doing household chores to shepherds, the sounds of animals being called to or chased away, the voices of shepherds and berry pickers, and hunters' signals, while the Magi use voice, guitar, flute to represent that soundscape.
