The three works on this album can be described as \"laments\" in different musical languages. In each work, Gielen never becomes absorbed in the music, but expresses the work's mourning in a rational way. It depicts the grief of Mary, the mother of Jesus, after his death. Penderecki's three-part \"Dies Ile\" is from 1926. It has the subtitle \"Auschwitz Oratorio\" because it was written in memory of the victims of the Auschwitz concentration camp. At the end of the album, \"Lament for the Victims of Hiroshima\" for 52 string instruments is placed. It is one of the most representative works of the 20th century, characterized by techniques such as tone clusters and a wide range of dynamics. The fade-out from ff to pppp in the final scene is a particular highlight of Gielen's skill. The singers are among the best of their time, and the ensemble is superb.
