Description:

Antônho Carlos Gomes was born in Brazil, studied in Italy, and after performing several of his own operas at La Scala and achieving fame, he returned to Brazil and is considered the founder of the Brazilian National Music School, a 19th century composer. This opera, "Lo Schiavo (The Slave)," was first performed in Brazil in 1889 against the backdrop of slavery. The work was completed after a difficult process that included changing the setting to a different time period, as the abolition of slavery was a major political issue in Brazil at the time. Although the premiere of the work was a great success in Brazil, it was later lost to oblivion in the passage of time. This CD is a revival of the work by the Cagliari Opera, a company that has been actively engaged in discovering and staging hidden masterpieces. The drama is woven into the conflict between the native people (slaves) and the Portuguese rulers, with a love-hate relationship between a man and a woman, and is set to a dramatic and beautiful melody reminiscent of Verdi. The excellent young singers sing with great spontaneity, and the Brazilian-born master singer, John Neschling's baton, brings the colorful and dramatic music of Gomes together beautifully.
