The Black Oak Ensemble's current program features works by Jewish composers from Austria, Hungary, and Czechoslovakia who were persecuted as \"degenerate composers\" at the beginning of the 20th century. Of the six composers included in this album, five died in the war without seeing it end, but Geza Fried survived World War II as a member of the Dutch resistance and became an important figure on the Dutch musical scene after the war. The Trio was composed as a young man, and is an original work influenced by Hungarian folk music. Other works on this disc include works by Krása and Klein, both of which we have heard more and more recently, as well as Hermann's advanced trio, the youthful Kattenburg Trio, and Kuti's Serenade. The conductor Scholty, who was a classmate of Kuti's at the Franz Liszt Academy, praised his work highly, saying, \"If he had lived, he would have been the greatest Hungarian composer of all time.
