Jens Barnik

Born in Hesse to a Jewish doctor, Gernsheim studied piano with Moscheles in Leipzig, where his family emigrated to avoid the revolution in 1848, and eventually went to Paris to study. In 1897, he became a member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin, and in 1901, he was appointed director of the Higher School of the Academy of Composers. After his death, however, his works were almost forgotten for a time. In recent years, his popularity has begun to revive, and some of his works have been revived. The two piano sonatas from his teens boast an introspective beauty reminiscent of Schumann and Brahms, while the preludes from almost a decade later show Chopin's influence. The two sonatas are performed on an edition restored from Gernsheim's handwritten manuscript by the pianist Barnykh himself. Naxos Japan
