Description:

Pietro Trulli was an Italian composer who was very active as a court composer of the Elector of Bavaria, who had the hegemony in Munich and Brussels. Basically, every work by Tolli that has been revived today can be said to be a masterpiece ....... He was a genius who wrote music of great melodic beauty and dynamism that captured the essence of Italian music from around 1700. Since around the end of the 17th century, music in the southern Netherland (later Belgium) had been developing in a unique way, as French music, descended from Lully, and Italian music, which was being rooted by musicians from Italy, were competing with each other. In the midst of this development, the oratorio "The Insufficiency of This World," first performed in 1706, is a neat and substantial work that highlights the Passion Passage. The oratorio is performed in a chamber setting with only an oboe, strings, bass, and a few singers, because, like the French "Luzon de Tenebre," it was written for a time when luxury was not permitted. However, this is a monumental broadcast recording from 1988, and the sumptuous lineup of Musica Antiqua Köln in its heyday, alongside famous old-time singers, is a sight to behold! The group was known for its thrilling performances, full of "aggression" based on a thorough understanding of the subtleties of ancient instrumental ensembles, and it is hard to miss this recording made at a time when they were all virtuosos who would go on to form their own ensembles. The superb performances by Barbara Schlick, Dilek Lee Reagin, and other legendary singers who have played a leading role in the revival of Baroque opera are also worthy of attention. The full commentary, including how exciting the Brussels music world was around 1700, is also appreciated. Naxos Japan
