At the age of 17, he won the All-Union Piano Competition of the Soviet Union, and after graduating from the Odessa Conservatory, he moved to Moscow to study with the famous pianist Genrich Neigaus, where he further developed his musical talent. In 1938, at the age of 22, he won the first prize at the International Ysaÿe Competition, and his international reputation grew. After World War II, he was permitted by the Soviet government to perform freely in the West, and visited Japan several times. His U.S. debut was in 1955 in Philadelphia, playing Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 as a soloist. In 1959, he made his debut in England, and in 1969 he made his debut at the Salzburg Festival, where he was also treated as an exceptional Soviet artist of the time. This recording was made in 1979, and the music is typical of Girelis, who favored expression without pretense as he approached his later years. The deep loneliness that pervades Schumann's music, the ink-painting-like Brahms, and the sturdy Chopin piano sonata are all lined up with a sad expression. The beauty of Mozart's encore is truly a state of stillness.
