Giovanni Battista Somis

A collection of sonatas by Giovanni Battista Somis (1686-1763), a master of the Piedmontese school of music, a composer-violinist who had Corelli as a teacher and a contemporary of Tartini, who trained Pugnani, Giardini, and even Leclerc of France. On this album, nine sonatas from Op.3 and Op.4, generally known as "Sonatas for Violin and Passing Bass," are performed on the recorder. This is not, however, an eccentric arrangement or an odd recording. The recordings are not daring in terms of the performance customs of the time, and are based on research findings such as the fact that certain aspects of Somis' sonatas originally suggested playing on a flauto dilit (straight flute = vertical flute). The recorder player and composer Wolfram Schulich, who studied recorder with Case Bucke at the Zurich Conservatory and composition with Helmut Lachenmann at the Stuttgart Conservatory, is the conductor and recorder soloist of the Concerto Stella Matutina from Fra Bernardo. He has recorded several masterpieces with Fra Bernardo, including "Telemann: Concertos (FB 1702576)". Tokyo M-Plus
