Edvard Grieg Choir, Håkon Mæland Skrede

Description:

The first solo album from the famous Norwegian choral ensemble Edvard Grieg Kor! The vocal ensemble Edvard Grieg Kor was founded in Bergen as the resident a capella ensemble of the Grieg Museum "Trollhaugen". The ensemble has eight members. The ensemble regularly performs with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra and has participated in the recording of Berlioz's acclaimed "Requiem" (CHSA 5219) and Vaughan Williams' "Antarctic Symphony" (CHSA 5186). He has also joined the Bergen State Opera Chorus as a core ensemble. They have also appeared in concerts abroad, including Simon Rattle and the Berlin Philharmonic's "Glee Songs" and "War Requiem. This is the first album that the Edvard Grieg Choir will record alone. The program includes original works for mixed chorus as well as new arrangements and compositions. The "Four Psalms in Free Arrangement from Norwegian Folk Songs" (Op.72) for piano and "Slottel" (Op.72) are the final major works in which Grieg realizes his ambition to "reclaim Norwegian folk music as 'art music'".Ave maris stella" (Star of the Sea), in praise of the Virgin Mary, was written as a song in the Catholic tradition and arranged by Grieg himself for eight-part mixed chorus. From the Time of Holbea", a well-known work for string orchestra, was arranged by Jonathan Rathbone (England) as a vocal work for the Edvard Grieg Choir. Ole Bull's "Sunday of the Sater's Daughter," known for its arrangement for violin and orchestra by Svendsen. One of the most popular Norwegian folk songs, Grieg also made it into a piece for male chorus (Op.30 no.1), "Late at night I went to bed". The first of Bakker Grondahl's "Five Songs" (Op.30 no.1), "The Night is Silent. These three songs will be sung in arrangements by British tenor Paul Robinson, who joined the Edvard Grieg Choir in 2015. American composer David Lang's "The Last Spring" is based on the music and text of Grieg's song "Spring" (Op. 33 no. 2), composed on a poem by Vignet.Written for the Edvard Grieg Choir, the work was intended as a memorial to American curator Marion "Kippie" Boulton Stroud, who died suddenly while composing this piece.
