Formosa Quartet

The talented Formosa Quartet "From Hungary to Taiwan" Formosa Quartet was formed in Taiwan in 2002, and after changing members, is still an active string quartet in Taiwan and the United States as of 2018. The quartet has won first prize and the Amadeus Award at the London International String Quartet Competition (now the Wigmore Hall String Quartet Competition). Formosa is another name for Taiwan, and is still used in some parts of Europe. The program was thoughtfully designed, with pieces based on Hungarian and Taiwanese folk songs at the beginning and end, respectively, and two ethnic yet contemporary sounding pieces in the middle of the program. Dana Wilson's Hungarian Folk Songs, a well-known brass band piece, is a delight, almost like folk music. The Lei Liang piece is a clever combination of contemporary sound and local flavor, and the warmth of Bartók's intense masterpiece gives the audience a sense of space. The final piece is a collection of Taiwanese folk songs, which shows an affinity with Hungarian folk music. Tobu Land System
