Description:

Götterdämmerung, recorded in 1956, is now available on CD for the first time from the original master tapes. The first session recording of Wagner's Götterdämmerung, this is a pivotal recording of the great Norwegian soprano Kirsten Flagstadt (1895-1962) in the eponymous role of Brunnhilde. At the time, she had retired from opera in 1953 due to worsening arthritis that made it difficult for her to perform on stage, and was singing in recital in her native Norway. She was then noticed by John Culshaw (1924-1980), a legendary producer for Decca in England, who was planning to record Wagner's operas. Culshaw was able to sign her as a recording artist. At that time, she wanted to record "Twilight of the Gods," which she had recorded for broadcast in her native Norway in January 1956. Karshow accepted her offer on the condition that she make a complementary recording of the parts that had been cut for the broadcast or that contained performance errors. The supplementary recording was made in March of the same year.Although originally a monaural recording for broadcast, the sound quality is above the standard of the time, and the musical richness and historical significance of Siegfried's performance still retain their value, such as the use of Helden tenor Set Svanholm (1904-1964), who worked with her at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. The musical richness and historical significance of this work have not lost their value. Norwegian conductor Fjerstaedt (1903-1983) also conducts with a profound and magnificent performance in the tradition of Wagner's music.
